For thousands of years practitioners of “alternative” health have worked with and on the energy centers in human and other living beings. Their universal goal has been improved health and healing along with more serene feelings and settled emotions for that person or being. There is mention of chakra or “cakra” centers and kundalini, the energy that is thought to rise through those centers, in Vedic writings of 1500 B.C. and older works including the Upanishads. Many ancient cultures speak of energy within the human body that can be concentrated, and the related motion or direction the energy turns. Both the belief system and the preparation of the receiver (you need to be open and willing to allow the healing and alignment to take place) determines how the activation or correction of this energy affects the health and well being of the one receiving.
Chakras, depending on the system followed, are either six, seven or nine centers of energy. Those centers roughly correspond to nerve complexes or locations where large groups of nerves come together in a sort of cluster along the spinal column. These same groups of energy also interface with organs and various parts of the body. In eastern medicine the life force - “chi” or “prana” - is the flow of energy or life force moving between these and all other parts of the physical body. The energy/vibration/wavelength is also present in the electrical energy field that surrounds each of us.
In many graphics and writings about chakras and kundalini, the “snake” of energy that travels up your spine and out through your crown chakra when doing certain types of physical and spiritual practice may make chakras seem foreign and like they have to be done in conjunction with difficult, disciplined yoga poses. While yoga is an ancient physical exercise and meditative practice, you do not have to do yoga to work with and on your chakras. In fact, much yoga practice teaches to keep the energy open, flowing, and in the correct location in the body. Meditation, modalities of massage and bodywork, music, color, stones, and many other things can be used to help align and open the chakras so they function properly.
A little fun fact - there are over 600 nerve endings in your feet. No wonder it feels so good to take your shoes off when you get home from work!
Just like your body has a circulatory system that moves blood and fluids throughout every part of your body, you also have an electrical energy network that does the same thing. Your nervous system is very complex and interfaces with every type of cell tissue in your body. Every cell tissue has a distinct electrical signature that makes it operate at its best. You can think of the chakras in your body as the definition of what that electrical signature is, more pronounced.
Chakras, like nearly everything else in the Universe, are energy. Energy is a wavelength, and each wavelength has a particular color and amplitude. They also have a particular pitch or tone (think musical note) they vibrate to. Think of a string on a guitar. Each string has a different note or sound when strummed. When you have heard a guitar in tune, you know instinctively when a string is played and it is out of tune. The chakras are the same, in that they, too, have different correct pitches or vibrational wavelengths that also correspond to a color and a note. Bringing them back “into tune” allows the body to have the correct, balanced, healthy flow of energy it needs.
You may have heard someone say “a chakra is blocked.” This usually means an energy center has become out of alignment, has stopped sending and receiving energy properly, or has been damaged in some way.
Chakra energy can get scrambled by a number of things including illness, injuries, stress, fatigue, fear, grieving, negative energy, and emotional and psychological issues, just to name a few. Misalignment of bone structures in the body, and dark and negative entities can all cause serious problems for the electrical pattern and/or direction the chakra “spins” (revolves). These all can cause challenges with health and cause “chi” or life force to become out of balance. Unless one is trained in disciplined chakra work on oneself, often these energy centers can get so out of balance (or even stop!) that health and well being are greatly compromised.
For the purpose of realignment and healing work, I usually work with a 7/9 system. The seven locations and corresponding color (wavelength of electrical energy they emit) are:
Red - Root - Base of spinal column - Security, stability, grounding, foundation, basic survival instincts
Orange - Sacral - Behind and slightly below your belly button - Creative and sexual energy, emotional response
Yellow - Solar Plexus - In stomach area, several inches above belly button - Confidence, self esteem, view of self
Green - Pink - Heart - Near heart, closer to center of chest at base of sternum - Love, compassion, physical healing, healing emotions, success
Blue - Throat - base or hollow of throat - Communication, discernment in 3rd dimension interaction (what is going on around us)
Indigo - Third eye - Between and slightly above where eyes meet to lower center of forehead - intuition, imagination, gut instinct, connection to spiritual gifts
Violet - Crown - Center of top of head, where plates of skull meet - spiritual connection to self, others, and Universe. Also acts as center to connect with life purpose and spiritual development
My training also includes white above the crown of the head (white LIght from the Universe) and within the energy field around the body, and dark brown/black under the feet and within the energy field, the color and energy of grounding to the earth.
You are probably more aware of your energy centers than you realize. For example, if you are a parent, you can “find” your child by feeling their presence. This is an awareness of their chakra energies by your energy field. If you have been in love, or love someone such as a parent dearly, the heart chakras “feel” the other person. This, too, is sensing and being in contact with the “heart center” of that person.
Locating your chakras can be a little challenging at first. The best way to find them is to relax, close your eyes, and let your mind settle to the area of the chakra you want to connect with. You can also move your receiving hand (right for most people) over the suggested area. You may feel a nudge or pull if you are slightly off. Move your hand slowly, ending in small, circular motions until it feels “right”. The chakras have distinct energy signatures, and once you learn what they feel like, you will not forget the feeling. It is also ok if you do not immediately pick up on the energy. Your mind may be occupied and need to quiet, or you may have a blockage in that area that needs help coming into alignment and flow.
Depending on what the person needs, when I do chakra balancing and realignment for clients I utilize a number of modalities determined by feel and medical intuition about what will work best while being the gentlest. At the onset I generally bring my hands close but not touching your body to sense the position, rotation, and health of each center. As I continue, sometimes I am completely no touch (and can be if this is more comfortable for you). Some sessions involve light touch, especially when correcting the direction of spin in the chakra (chakras spin clockwise and counterclockwise and alternate every other chakra for balancing energy direction.) I may use color, music or sound, or stones of appropriate color or energy. Each session is focused on what you need, where you need it, and what needs correction or healing. Most patients are very relaxed and even sometimes a bit sleepy at the end of a session, as the opposing forces are calmed and correct energy flow returns to the body.
As a Usui Fire Reiki Master and as a trained medical intuitive, I am extremely sensitive to chakras and how they are functioning in your body. Chakras are extremely important to your physical, emotional, and psychological health. Your chakras affect your ability to spiritually develop and grow. They not only affect your interior body energy, but also the energy in the fields around your body. Those “auras” or “dimensions” tell a lot about how and who you are, where you are in life and your emotional and psychological current situation. (If you are interested in what your auras are telling you and others, I also do very sophisticated auric reading with state-of-the-art equipment that provides both images and a very detailed report when complete.) Contact me and let’s get your chakras healthy and functioning as they optimally should.
